Ducks and Lovers Wins 2004 Directors Choice Award,
Two Staged Readings

Ducks and Lovers, the hilarious heart-felt new musical, has been awarded the 2004 Directors Choice Award by acclaimed director John Rando (Urinetown), and will receive two staged readings in New York City under the auspices of BroadwayUSA. Readings will take place at Primary Stages at 354 West 45th Street on Monday, September 27 at 8pm and Friday, October 1 at noon.

Based on the play by Murray Schisgal, this uproarious musical has been praised by theatre luminaries Lee Adams, Sheldon Harnick, Stephen Schwartz, Peter Stone, Maury Yeston, and David Zippel, just to name a few. After attending an early developmental workshop, theatre critic Peter Filichia [TheaterMania] wrote “Here’s what I’d like to see optioned and mounted: ‘Ducks and Lovers’.”

Ducks and Lovers follows the hilarious collision of the corporate advertising world, a traditional gypsy family, and a duck. This wacky musical with heart was initially developed at BMI’s Musical Theatre Workshop (a la Chorus Line, Nine, and Avenue Q) and has enjoyed developmental readings and workshops at ASCAP, The Dramatists Guild, Plano Rep (TX), Sharon Stage (CT), Chicago’s Apple Tree Theatre, Stages ’98 Festival of New Musicals (Chicago) and NAMT’s Annual Festival of New Musicals in 2002.

“We’re thrilled that New York producers will finally have an opportunity to see the entire show on its feet,” says Peter Gootkind, the show’s composer, lyricist and co-bookwriter along with Marni Goltsman (What Did I Do With the Fish?). "Thankfully, our show has always attracted Broadway’s finest and most talented performers," adds Goltsman. Past cast members for Ducks readings have included Brooks Ashmanskas, Laura Benanti, Kerry Butler, Liz Callaway, Danny Gurwin, Ken Jennings, Brad Oscar, Evan Pappas, Patrick Quinn, Mary Stout, and Stuart Zagnit, among others.

Dan Foster will direct, and Albert Ahronheim will musical direct a cast of thirteen.
